What is Superior hypogastric plexus?

It is sympathetic nerve aggregation which transmits pain signals to abdominal organs

What are the indications for this block?

Cancer of cervix, Cancer of prostate, Cancer of ovary, Cancer of pelvic structure, Postlaminectomy, post-traumatic, postparaplegic painful conditions , non specific pelvic pain.

Is it a daycare procedure?

Yes it is a day care procedure, the patient is discharged the same day after two hours of observation.

How is the procedure done?

Procedure is done in operation theatre under the effect of local anesthesia. Patient is in prone position and under fluoroscopic guidance, the plexus is identified and medicines are injected. If Patient gets immediate pain relief, it is considered positive block.

How much duration does it take to complete the procedure?

It takes 15 to 20 minutes to finish the procedure. The patient is kept under observation for an hour and discharged.

What are the chances of complications and how to identify them?

There are moderate chances of complications, but since it is done under fluoroscopic guidance, so the chances of complications become minimal.
