Cervical Facet Joint Injections
What are cervical facets joints?
These are small joints formed by the upper and lower vertebrae on either side of the spine of the neck, which helps in the flexion and extension of the neck and to maintain its stability.
What will be patients complaints?
Cervical facet joint arthropathy or osteoarthritis are degenerative conditions occurring due to aging or trauma (whiplash injury). The patients will present with pain and stiffness in neck, limited mobility of neck movement and headaches.
How is the procedure done?
The procedure is done in operation theatre under local anesthesia. The patient lies on his stomach and the point of maximum tenderness is checked with fluoroscopic machine to identify the joint involved. After the identification of joint, small needle is passed into the joint and medications are given. This will relieve the patient’s pain.
How long the procedure will take?
This procedure is done under daycare. The procedure will take 15-20 minutes and then the patient is observed for 2 hours for any complications or side effects.
What are the side effects of the procedure?
There are minimal side effects of the procedure when done under fluoroscopic guidance.
What are the post procedure recommendations?
Post intervention patient is advised exercises and medicines which has to be followed as said by the doctor.
