Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) therapy
What is TENS?
TENS – Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulator . It is a non pharmacological method of pain management using a low voltage electric current. A small battery –powered machine is connected to the skin through the electrodes and the concerned nerves are stimulated. It is mostly used in treating neuropathic pain.
In which conditions TENS can be used ?
Neck pain, low back pain, sciatica, migraines, headaches, osteoarthritis, shoulder pain, frozen shoulder, neuropathic cancer pain.
How does it act?
The electrodes are placed over any part of the body , creating a circuit of electric current. When electrical signals are passed , they will stimulate the nerves of affected area and will decrease down the pain signals giving gradual relief over a period of time.
How long the pain will be relived?
The pain will come down gradually with the use of TENS therapy along with the medications . Usually done for 30 minutes two to three times a day will lead to good pain relief.
What are the advantages?
It is a non invasive technique, which can be done at home, minimal side effects, good pain relief.
What are the precautions to be taken?
Information regarding placement of electrodes, use of correct electrical intensity and duration of the therapy has to be taken care off. Should not be used in patients with pacemakers.
